Have you watched Avatar in 3D? If yes, then you're one of the luckiest people on earth. That movie is so awesome even though the story is simple. I got goosebumps watching it. :D Well, in the case of one of the most aticipated games of 2010, the same question can be asked.
Have you played Final Fantasy XIII on the PS3?
If yes, you're a Japanese. They released the game in Japan on December 13, 2009.
If no, mark March 9, 2010 on your calendar.
So why did I compare Avatar to the FFXIII?
Avatar performed enormously at the box office. And if you watch it in 3D, it's more spectacular. It's perfect. Avatar brought huge money to the 3D venues where the film is available.
Much as in the case of FFXIII.
The game caused a huge surge on sales of the console in Japan - that's after the release of the most recent addition to the award-winning franchise. Not to mention the fact that FFXIII sold over 1 million units on the day of it's release. So do you think this game is fantastic? How could you say no when japanese video game magazines rated it high - Famitsugave it a 39/40, Dengeku wished to give it 120, 100 isn't enough.
THE STORY
The game takes place in a world known as Pulse. Focus is on the fal'Cie, mechanical beings of godlike power created from crystals within them, and the l'Cie, people that have been marked by the fal'Cie for greater purposes. They have a relationship like that of a master and a slave - the fal'Cie wants and l'Cie to fulfill a goal, called Focus, in a certain amount of time. Failing to fulfill this Focus is one reason an I'Cie becomes a monster known as Cie'th. If an l'Cie fulfilled his goal, he will be permanently transformed into a crystal. Because of this, being a l'Cie is seen as a curse.
Some 1,300 years ago, a fal'Cie named Orphan made the city of Cocoon that floats high above the surface of Pulse. He then made machines and life forms for Cocoon's inhabitants to utilize, helping humanity flourish.
Most Cocoon citizens have never seen Pulse with their own eyes. The catch is, anyone who is discovered to have seen the Pulse is quarantined and exiled the the government of Cocoon, Sanctum. It's strongest military branch, PSICOM, is used to enforce this policy.
This is where Lightning, the protagonist, the one on the image at the top, comes in. I won't tell you the story because I myself hate spoilers. :D Just a teaser will do.
THE GAME
Watched Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children yet? FFXII's battle system was made because of the desire to create similar battles found on the movie. Enemies are integrated into the world environment and during encounter, the characters and the foes are transported to a separate place where the battle starts. The Active Time Battle (ATB) system is used, but it works differently from its predecessors. A player can stack different commands into slots per turn and release at the same time to form a combo. The HP and MP, called as cost points, system is also used. The HP of each character is restored fully after each battle because magic cannot be used outside battles. There is also this "break state" on enemies, a state where the enemy is weakened and the player can inflict tons of damages and even hurl the enemy into the air. The leveling system of the game, called Crystarium System, is reminiscent of the Sphere Grid in FFX. Characters also have Roles, similar to the Jobs of the previous installments. Summoned creatures are also available in the name of Eidolons, though the summoning system is quite unique to the game.
So, did I got you excited? Maybe yes, unless you're Japanese and you already finished the game. ^_^
THE VERDICT
I give it a 10/10, though I haven't played it yet of course. Here's why: Final Fantasy VII is the first entry of the series to the Playstation, and it became one of the greatest game ever. Final Fantasy X is the first game from the series for the Playstation 2, and it's in the same league with FFVII. And Final Fantasy XIII is the first for the Playstation 3. So maybe history will repeat itself. And what would you expect from the most recent Final Fantasy game? Nothing short of magnificent.
