Montcoal, WV Mine Explosion - 25 Dead, 4 Missing

Montcoal, WEST VIRGINIA -25 coal miners were killed in a mine explosion considered the worst US mining disaster since 1984.

Four men are still missing, which are feared to be dead since rescuers are held back by poisonous gases in the blast site which is about 1-1/2 miles from the entrance.

The Upper Big Branch Mine , owned by Massey Energy, has a history of safety violations , especially for improper ventilation, according to safety officials.

Rescue attempts were halted until at least Wednesday morning. The mine owner, together with state and federal officials, is drilling holes in order to vent explosive gas from the mine by the use of high pressure fans. Massey employed two drills, which are only about 160 feet down so far.

"The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration will investigate this tragedy, and take action," U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis said in a statement. "Miners should never have to sacrifice their lives for their livelihood."
