Eyjafjallajökull Volcano Eruption

Icelandic volcano that goes with the terrific name of Eyjafjallajökull continues erupting on Wednesday, disgorging volcanic ash which surrounded about 11 kilometers of an area into the atmosphere. Ever since 9/11, this is the worst airspace disturbance ever, bringing in worldwide flight cancellations which prevented President Obama from attending the funeral of the Polish President Lech Kaczynski. Tens of thousands of travellers are stranded worldwide.

Unless the ash cloud produced by the Eyja-something volcano hangs around longer than expected, the disturbance in air travel will not have a huge effect on Europe’s slow recession recovery.

Seismic activity was detected in the volcano area around December 2009. Two months later, unusual activity, along with the rapid expansion of the Earth’s crust, was registered by the Meteorological Institute of Iceland. The eruption is thought to have begun on March 20, 2010 which is in the form of a fissure vent. Another eruption occurred on April 14, 2010, which was explosive in nature and the perpetrator to the worst airspace disturbance.

FAST FACT: The volcano in question is covered by a glacier named Eyjafjallajökull. Well, maybe the media adopted the name of the glacier to the volcano itself. I wonder.

Now that is a disturbance in airspace. :D
