Chain of Memories - Chapter 7

THE CALL

As Robedith prepare to sleep, she smiled. She stared at her ring finger, where a plain gold ring beautified it. As she stare at it, she noticed that there are carvings on the ring.

Yours forever . . .

She blushed.

“Honey, you’re so good with these things. I love you.” She kissed the ring.

She decided that it was the best evening in her entire life ever – for the time being, anyway.

Her phone suddenly rang. She let her eyes linger on the ring for a moment, and then went to pick up the phone.

“Hello?”

Silence.

She looked at the display of her phone and noticed the number of the caller. It is something she’s unfamiliar with.

She immediately pressed the end-call button of her phone. She then placed it on the table and proceeded to the bathroom. Before she made it, however, the phone rang again.

“Hello?” she answered, a little bit annoyed.

“See you in the morning.”

The caller hung up.

Robedith was shocked.

“What? He’s coming? Why? Why is he coming?” she asked herself. She stared at her phone, as if addressing her questions to it.

She knew that voice – the voice that she won’t probably ever forget, the voice that always sounded as though the speaker is suffering. But something is wrong, thought Robedith. There’s something in that voice that she is not accustomed to. It sounded brighter than usual. She could not think of any way that can make that voice sound like that.

And when she did, the idea made her tingle with fear.

She dialled a number on her phone. After a minute,  she said, “Please answer. Please.”

She dialled the number again. Another series of beeps. No answer.

“Honey, please answer. Please.”

-----

Changmin is walking as if he doesn’t give a damn about anything. He walked straight – he stepped on the neighbours’ bushes, almost hit a pole and fell on a manhole, almost stumbled. The man seemed barely conscious of his surroundings.

“Hey Min!”

Changmin came back to reality. He stood still, taking in the surroundings.

“Hey stupid!”

The voice came from behind. Changmin spun around to check who was shouting.

He saw Jeff on the doorstep of their house.

He was so lost in his thoughts to the extent that he didn’t notice that he already made it past his house. Embarrassed, he went to the door.

"Hyung!" Changmin said.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Jeff asked.

“To the house of course. Isn’t it obvious?” Changmin replied.

Jeff hit his brother’s head. “Stupid. You’re going straight down the street. Maybe you lost your mind along the way.”

“Yeah, maybe,” Changmin responded.

“What kind of reply is that? Ha ha. Anyway, where is the wine?”

“Oh, that.”

“Yeah. Don’t tell me you drank it along the way?”

“No, of course not. The shop’s already closed.”

“Really? I thought so. Well, that’s too bad. We can’t celebrate tonight,” Jeff said. He turned and went inside the house.

Changmin stood still. He was thinking about the events that happened just few hours ago – Robedith and her silky black dress, her dazzling eyes, her lips, everything.

He was so amazed with how things on the proposal went so smoothly.

After some minutes, he finally entered the house. He fetched his cell phone from his pocket to check for updates.

“Oh no,” he whispered.

There are 9 missed calls from Robedith.

“Oh no. No, no, no, no, no,” he said. He immediately dialled Robedith’s number.

She’s not answering.

Changmin felt stupid, as always. How the hell did he fail to notice that Robedith’s calling?

“Hey Min, Robe!” Jeff called out to Changmin.

“Where?”

“Here,” Jeff gave Changmin his cell phone.

“Hello?” Changmin said to the phone.

“Honey!” Robedith’s voice broke. She’s crying.

“What’s wrong?”

“Why didn’t you answer my calls? I thought.. I thought something happened to you..”

“Honey, relax. Breathe easy. I’m alright. I’m fine.”

“Yeah, ” Robedith sobbed. She tried to steady her breathing.

“What’s wrong?” Jeff asked.

“I just thought that something bad might have happened to you. Thank God I’m wrong,” Robedith explained.

“Why? What made you think of that?”

Robedith hesitated.

“Honey? Are you still there?”

“Yes.”

“Is something wrong?”

“None, honey. Don’t worry. I’m fine.” She sounded better now.

“You sure?”

“Yeah.”

Silence.

Changmin felt lost. It’s the first time that Robedith sounded like she’s on the verge of losing herself. He felt that Robedith was hiding something, though he knows he won’t persuade her to tell him that. He trusts her.

“Good night honey, just checking you out. I love you. Be careful always,” Robedith said.

“Sure. You know that I’m living my life now for you. I will be careful. Always. Good night honey! See you in my dreams,” Changmin replied.

“Ha ha. See you too!”

“Now that sounds much better. Relax honey. Alright?”

“Yeah, ok. Thanks. I love you.”

“I love you too, honey. Good night!”

“Good night!”

She hung up.

“What was that all about?” Jeff asked. “Robe sounded like you died or something.”

“Yeah, she thought something happened to me since I did not answer any of her calls.”

“You are stupid, making her cry.”

“Hey, this is not funny.”

“I know. She must be feeling better now.”

“Yeah. Hyung, I think she’s hiding something.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. I felt it while she’s talking with me. She seems like she’s holding back. I felt she wanted to say something, but she did not.”

“Did you ask her?”

“No. She’s a smart girl. I know she knows what she’s doing.”

“Well then, that’s alright. Anyway, it’s getting late. We should get to sleep.”

“Yeah. Good night hyung.”

“Good night.”

As Changmin walked to his room, he pondered over Robedith’s behaviour on the phone.

“Is she hiding something?”
